Materials:

• Black construction paper (I used 12x18")
• oil pastels or construction paper crayons

Lesson:

Students learn about Pablo Picasso and his wacky portraits! 
I make sure to tell them that he was a very talented painter from a young age and got bored of painting realistically. When I ask which of the paintings (slide 2) they think he painted as a child, they always pick the abstract one which was actually painted later! I highlight the difference between abstract and realistic artwork.

I usually review different types of line with this lesson and if using oil pastels, color mixing as well. They enjoy using different kinds of line to divide up the objects in their painting.
