Lesson:Look at Kandinsky's Squares with Concentric Circles. I typically discuss shapes and colors found in the piece as well as how he studied color through works like this one. We also talk about sizes of objects in the artwork (small, medium, large).
Introduce the collage lesson and talk about layering and the order that students should glue in ("should I glue the smallest circle first? which one should I glue first?"). I also talk about handling scissors, and about how to handle curves. Typically, the hand with the scissors should stay in one place while opening and closing while the other hand moves the paper. Make sure that students start in a corner so they can fit all six circles on their paper. You can use whatever colors you'd like for the background, the photos are from the first time I did the lesson. I've definitely done the lesson with squares behind the circles as well, and I love that the pieces look like a large quilt when displayed together! |
